Globally Recognized and Loved Books

(We’ve left out religious texts and anything by JK Rowling, or else there wouldn’t be anything else on the list.)

No one knows what REALLY makes a bestseller. Some things hit, some things don’t, and unless someone has a crystal ball or your name is James Patterson, there is no way for an author to know how people will react to their book until they release it into the great beyond! Some educated guesses can certainly be made, but it is a mercurial formula to be sure.

And once it conquers its own country, a destined-to-be international bestseller has to capture the attention of people around the entire world. But is there a “secret recipe” to creating a bestseller? Check out our list and you tell us. These books run the gamut of genre, plot, and character development. Do these books have anything in common? Dive into our list of recent, popular bestsellers that went on to make their mark around the world over the last five-ish years!

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow--and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling--and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness--and, because he blamed the press for his mother's death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz

by Erik Larson

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR

On Winston Churchill's first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next twelve months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally--and willing to fight to the end.

In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows, in cinematic detail, how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless." It is a story of political brinkmanship, but it's also an intimate domestic drama, set against the backdrop of Churchill's prime-ministerial country home, Chequers; his wartime retreat, Ditchley, where he and his entourage go when the moon is brightest and the bombing threat is highest; and of course 10 Downing Street in London.
