2026 Kirkus Prize Winners and Finalists

If you’ve been in the book world for a while, you’ve probably heard the name Kirkus. If not, you’re about to find out what it’s all about. The Kirkus Prize has recognized outstanding fiction and nonfiction books as well as YA titles since 2014, but the brand’s reputation is much older than that. Kirkus Reviews has been reading and reviewing advance copies of new books since 1933, and it finally created its own literary award to recognize the best of the best each year.

The Kirkus Prize Selection Process

The Kirkus Prize is different from other literary awards because there’s no application process. Authors can’t submit their own book, and publishers can’t recommend books either. Instead, the whole process relies on the prestigious Kirkus Star.

  • Step 1: Earn a star. Kirkus editors review some 10,000 books annually, including roughly 3,500 novels, 2,800 nonfiction titles and nearly 4,000 YA books. About one in 10 books, or about 1,000 titles, earn a starred review. These are the books that the editors view as truly exceptional.
  • Step 2: Any book published between November 1 and the following October that gets a starred review is automatically nominated for the Kirkus Prize. This also includes self-published books reviewed through the Kirkus’ Indie program, ensuring that the award is inclusive and doesn't just favor “Big Five” publishers.
  • Step 3: The next step is to narrow down the contenders to create a shortlist of potential award winners. Only six books make the cut in each category, out of hundreds of candidates. It’s a big job, and there are only nine people doing it. Each category has a three-person jury composed of an author, a bookseller, professor or critic and a Kirkus editor.
  • Step 4: The Kirkus Prize shortlist is announced annually in late August, and the winners are revealed at a special award ceremony held in early October. Landing on the Kirkus shortlist is a huge accomplishment, but becoming a winner comes with even more prestige, plus a $50,000 prize that’s split between the author and any other contributors, such as a translator or illustrator.

Fiction: Kin: Oprah's Book Club

by Tayari Jones

isbn: 9780525659181,template: list

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK - WINNER OF THE KIRKUS PRIZE

Picture two girls growing up in 1950s small-town Louisiana, both without their mothers, who become best friends. That’s Niecy and Annie, and it’s where Kin begins. Jones follows them as their lives head in very different directions, and she tells it all in a warm, conversational voice that feels like someone telling you a family story. Kirkus praised how the book uses these two women to look at bigger questions of injustice. This one’s for you if you love character-driven novels and contemporary fiction with a strong sense of place.

Nonfiction: Catch the Devil: A True Story of Murder, Deception, and Injustice on the Gulf Coast

by Pamela Colloff

isbn: 9780593230862,template: list

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - KIRKUS PRIZE WINNER - The riveting, true story of an audacious con man who helped send another man to death row for a murder he did not commit

In 1987, Jim Dailey was convicted of murdering 14-year-old Shelly Boggio and ended up on death row for decades. Colloff digs into how that conviction happened, and a jailhouse informant’s testimony sits at the center of it. The book goes beyond one case, though, and shows how easily the justice system can look the other way when a deal is convenient. If you inhaled your favorite true-crime podcast or enjoy our Stunt Double book picks, this is a smart, serious next read.

YA: Anger Is Only a Shadow

by Elizabeth Acevedo

isbn: 9780062882790,template: list

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From National Book Award-winning author and renowned poet Elizabeth Acevedo comes a white-knuckle journey to self-understanding and doing the right thing, no matter the cost.

This YA book is from multi-award-winning author Elizabeth Acevedo (The Poet X). Liliana is waiting on a trial date, wearing an ankle monitor, and worried about her brother Aldwin, whose mental health is getting worse. She has to decide whether to risk her own future to get to him. Acevedo tells it in verse, which makes it quick to read but emotionally heavy, and Kirkus singled out the loving, fully rounded characters. Teens will connect with it, and so will plenty of adults.
